TOPIC: ATTAINING EXCELLENCE
Read: Philippians 3:12-16
Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.
Factors contributing to who we turn out to be in life, include our instinct to compete for success, desire to be self-sufficient, and our cravings for glory or recognition. In most cases, the yardstick for success is set by others, and we strive to perform up to their expectations. In seeking autonomy, we often forget that by nature, we need others to experience maximum fulfilment.
Paul sets Christ as the yardstick for becoming God's best in life. In the pursuit of excellence, the purpose of Christ in calling Apostle Paul was paramount. He defined perfection in the light of that purpose. Paul set out some guidelines in attaining that perfection.
First, it is a process, because it occurs daily and not in a day. If it were to be attainable in a day, he would have admonished believers to look back to the day. Instead, he summons us to look ahead.
Secondly, attaining excellence demands discipline. It is to be ruggedly committed to a given course. It requires patience and endurance, because our doggedness will be tested. Being disciplined will turn your practice into a habit. And the more you exercise commitment to a given end, the harder it becomes to surrender.
Another trait of godly pursuits of excellence is that it raises the yardstick beyond others' expectation. Potential is what a person is capable of. Pursuing God's purpose for your life does not see you in competition with others. It is achieved not by the yardstick of others, but by your own recognition of Christ's purpose for your life. This yardstick is higher than the standards anyone else can set for you, and you can only discover it through regular communion with God, in His Word, prayer and fellowship with other brethren.
1. Lord, help me to see beyond the achievements of the past, so as to discern your plan for my future.
2. Lord, I want to rise above the disappointments of the past, in order to position myself for Your use.
3. Lord, empower every believer to live by Your standard for our lives, in Christ Jesus.
