_It is advisable that you prayerfully and meditatively read the text first_ *LIMITATIONS OF GREATNESS* *TEXT:* JOB 32:1-10_*KEY VERSE* "Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment" (JOB 32:9)._ The idiom "Achilles' heel" refers to weakness in spite of overall strength. The idiom relates to a Greek mythology about Achilles who was told that he would die young. To prevent this, his mother, Thetis, took him to the River Styx, which was supposed to offer powers to make him invincible and dipped his body into the water. However, as Thetis held Achilles by the heel, his heel was not washed over by the water of the river. Achilles grew up to be a man of war who survived many great battles but eventually died when an arrow was shot at his heel. His vulnerable spot eventually limited his greatness. Elihu, a much younger friend of Job, after carefully listening to the accusations and counter accusations between Job and his friends, decided to make his contributions to the debate. Usually, the elderly should moderate arguments, but in this instance, the younger was doing it. Elihu was not happy with Job because he thought he did not speak so reverently of God as he ought "because he justified himself rather than God". He was angry at his friends "because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job". He then stated his observation that many people we celebrate on earth lack the wisdom to match their prowess with grace. It is folly, therefore, to subscribe to the dictates of people because they are "great" Today, the situation is not different. Many notable men and women lack the knowledge of the true God and are unfortunately glorifying their folly. The Scriptures affirm that godly wisdom is from above and anyone who lacks it, no matter their greatness, is actually not wise. We should seek God's face for wisdom to enable us apply spiritual principles to our heart, home and family as we flourish in faith. *THOUGHT FOR THE DAY* Godly wisdom is better than worldly greatness. *BIBLE IN ONE YEAR* EPHESIANS 1-3. *MEDITATION* *Your pursuit: Greatness on earth or greatness in heaven* *1. Greatness defined by wisdom*a. There are different forms of greatness on earth as defined by possessions, powers, positions, prowess, etc.b. What makes the greatness is the "uncommonality" or peculiarity of such gifts.c. Each of these types of greatness is obtained by manifestations of a particular form of wisdom or the other. For example great researchers must be intelligent, great footballers must have special skills or wisdom to know how, the wealthy must have a wisdom that brings wealth which is not common to all. d. The wisdom may be innate, acquired or developed, yet, none can claim possessions of all classes of wisdom. For example, a researcher may be ignorant of wisdom in moral values and a great entertainer may be totally bankrupt of business ideas.e. The summary is that great men are not necessarily reservoir of wisdom that must be followed at all times, v9. *2. Greatness defined by God* a. Jesus defined true greatness as a feat that will outlast the present and remain till eternity, Matthew 5:19.b. The truly great is the one that has the wisdom to be eternally conscious to the point of giving what its takes to end up in eternal bliss as against hell fire, Matthew 5:19.c. Can you fault Jesus? Who is really great, poor Lazarus or the rich man? Who is really wise, the great Lucifer or the humble unnoticed child of God who made heaven and sits on eternal throne for ever? Who is really great, Moses or Pharaoh? *Note* Early greatness is not worth dying for. It is transient, fleeting and not satisfactory; while heavenly greatness is the wisest thing to purse. Jesus has shown the way to true greatness in Matthew 5:9. *Prayer points*Ask for true wisdom that will make you to value eternal greatness above all earthly greatnessAsk for deep Christian virtues and grace that that will earn you greatness in the presence of GodPray that you will not be deceived or envious of those who only have earthly greatnessAsk God that He will give all members the spirit of understanding to follow after heavenly greatness *HYMN* Trust and Obey.
